| All Wicked/Steampunk vending officially sold out |
[Nov. 13th, 2009|03:13 pm] |
Folks, this is the day: We have officially sold out both events on vending (that's four months before Wicked and seven before the Steampunk World's Fair. The only space left at this time would be the remaining hotel-room-vending spot on our Dealer's Row for Wicked; there are two, at $135 They actually have reservations (which is why we're sold out), but we're pretty sure at least one of those reservations is going to cancel.
If you have applied for your space and been accepted, but have not paid in full, we do need that payment by the 20th; if we don't receive it by then, we'll have to give your spot to someone on the waiting list.
If you're unsure about the status of your vending, or have questions, or want to be on the mailing list, please contact wickedvendors@gmail.com or steamfairvendors@gmail.com, respectively, ASAP. If you've got a verbal agreement with me but have not confirmed it via email, you need to email the vendor accounts. Best and safest ways to pay us are either via credit card at www.widdershins.com/payment, or my paypal address, which is jeffmach at runningwatermusic.com.
I deeply apologize if any of this is coming off as mean, but it seems a lot of people did not expect us to sell out anywhere near this soon, and people are starting to yell at poor Aiden, asking why they don't have spots. I want to try to avoid anyone else getting mad or upset--I'm sorry!
Please feel free to repost this if/where you feel it's appropriate. |

| Into the Future! (I'm on Twitter Now) |

Originally published at Durosia.com. You can comment here or there. OK... now that I have this shiny Droid phone (which has a nice keyboard on it, both physically and on-screen, when needed), I no longer have an excuse for avoiding text-message-based things. Gods know I was sending enough texts using the old phone, though doing so grudgingly.
Now you can find me on that Twitter thing: http://twitter.com/kierduros
I've started to go through and add people, but feel free to beat me to the punch. :)
Can't promise that I'll tweet much. It's not like a do a whole lot of fascinating things. But it is another way of keeping in touch, and that's not a bad thing at all. |

| Chapter 5: Playing the cards |
[Nov. 12th, 2009|11:55 pm] |
Originally published at A Tarot Experiment. You can comment here or there. Every step of the way, each new card spread is pointing directions for the story and revealing the plot. Little by little I get more ideas for who these characters are and what they've done before, are doing now, and will be doing as the plot progresses.
As usual, though, sometimes it's tricky to tell exactly what character is supposed to appear in a scene.
At first glance, this chapter's spread appears to be one of those times.
- Seven of Swords (inverted)
- The Hanged Man
- Strength
- The Sun (Inverted)
- Wheel of Fortune (inverted)
- Knight of Swords
- King of Shields (inverted)
- The Universe
- King of Swords
- Six of Shields (inverted)
No matter what, there's some interesting progressions--especially since I'm using the Celtic Cross and Staff spread (which, as time goes on, I'm thinking may not be the best spread to use for this sort of exercise... at least not in the general chapter plotting area). ( Read More... ) |

| LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares! |
[Nov. 12th, 2009|01:53 pm] |

Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
- An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

| Update on the Theft. |
[Nov. 12th, 2009|08:06 am] |
I'm afraid there is not much to tell so far. Some people have asked if there are any leads and such but regrettably there has been no word. I do still truly want to thank you all for you concern. I managed to make a new piece as a replacement and get it to the museum on time for opening. The Oxford Steampunk Exhibit has been incredibly successful and I hope all of you get a chance to see it. http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/steampunk/

| Day 4, only a week late... |
[Nov. 12th, 2009|02:13 am] |
Originally published at A Tarot Experiment. You can comment here or there. OK, finally got to just over my minimum for Chapter 4. That only leaves me about, oh, 10,000 words behind (give or take a thousand). Still better than previous years, though. I'm up to just over 7,000--which puts me not too far away from the most I think I ever managed to crank out during a NaNoWriMo.
So, not bad at all, actually, when put in context. :)
Counting these blog entries, I'm over 10K words.
Anyway...
In this past word dump, I seem to have introduced one of my "go to" background groups: a still kind of mysterious terrorist organization. They first appeared in my writing years ago in a story set in the far-flung future where they were greatly opposed to humans leaving the planet (or something along those lines... never did finish that story).
Based on some other bits that have come to light as the words pour from my fingers, it seems they may know about some things that most people in the world do not... and things that our main characters are going to be discovering (or, in at least two cases, re-discovering).
Only two chapters left in this section of the book. Which should work out pretty well as I've got one more main character to introduce and then I have to bring them all together so the real story can get started. ( Read More... ) |

| Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT |
[Nov. 11th, 2009|02:00 pm] |
EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP.
Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!
Thanks mhwest and dnewhall for helping out!
---
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.
Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.
We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!
As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work. |

| Know Before I Go |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|10:51 am] |
Just wondering -- is there anyplace where I can find a floorplan for next year's D*C? That is, is there a map available that shows where and when events will take place?
I ask only because I don't wanna suffer from cranial overload like I did the first time I went to D*C back in '08. I would like to have some kind of guide so that when I go next year, it'll make forming a plan a little bit easier, and I won't get so overwhelmed when I go again in 2010.
Thanks in advance. |

| New and shiny |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|08:52 pm] |
My Droid showed up Monday afternoon.
Of course I couldn't play with it right then, work and all, y'know.
I did go through the basic setup and get a little playing done before I left. Then I hit Best Buy to scope out some headset and earphone options. Picked up a set that seemed to be good (wired, not Bluetooth). Going to have to return those... don't like they way the sit in my ears at all.
Got home, realized I'd left the Droid charger plugged in next to my desk at the office. That put a bit of a damper on futher playing with the new phone. Did get some apps loaded, still getting the feel for it all.
This post? Written on the new phone.
Not sure how long it's going to take me to get used to the tiny keyboard. Definitely better than a phone keypad, though. ;) |
